Pietra Pants & Shorts Pattern - PDF Pattern
- FABRIC & SUPPLIES
Learn to sew with our online course! All three patterns from our Rome Collection are included in enrollment.
Part of our Rome Collection, the Pietra Pants & Shorts are the best of both worlds; a flat front, high-waisted silhouette with the comfort of an elastic waist in the back. Featuring lengthening panels in the front with slanted hip pockets and a hidden waist stay, you’ll never want to take them off.
Choose between four leg styles: a wide leg in floor-skimming or cropped length (View A), a slim and tapered leg (View B), or gently flared shorts (View C).
Pietra is also available as a Print Pattern.
See our guide to printing & assembling PDF files here.
Model notes: Our model Sheenah is 5'-4" and wears a size 6. Aisha is 5'-7" and wears a size 20. All tops except for the close-fitting white tshirt are the Cielo Top from our Rome Collection.
This pattern can be made with a variety of fabrics depending on the desired effect. For a more defined shape, use structured wovens such as linen, chambray, or lightweight denim or twill (heavyweight wovens may create too much volume at the elastic waist). For a swishy, glamorous look, use rayon challis, tencel, or silk.

From the Closet Case Patterns Community
This is my first pattern from Closet Case and I am really pleased with the results. I was really excited by what I had seen of these pants online. I am fairly new to sewing clothes, but the instructions were easy to follow and I had no difficulties. Now I have a super comfortable and cute pair of shorts for this hot Australian Summer and am working on a pair of trousers for the balmy Summer nights :) Thank you for the Pietra Pants!
Fabulous pattern. Made up in white linen wide leg, with minimal alterations and fits really well
Am really pleased.
I love this pattern! It fit very well right out of the envelope and it was a fast sew. The pockets and front seams are cute and I love the comfy elastic waist in the back. The only thing that would make me happier would be a heavier paper. The tissue is a bit delicate. But the instructions are very good and I'm very happy with the pattern.
I love this pattern! I’m a beginner and bought the class that came with the digital Rome Collection, then ordered two of the print patterns with my discount (including this one) when I realized how many pages needed to be printed altogether. So far from this pattern I have sewn two wearable muslins, two pairs of shorts for myself, one pair of shorts for my daughter, a pair of tapered pants for myself, and a pair of wide leg cropped pants for my daughter. I have more planned. This pattern is a pleasure to sew, a pleasure to wear, and I looks very nice on.
I referred back to the videos often when making the first few pair and don’t know if I could have figured out the directions without them. The Pietra isn’t difficult to sew but it wasn’t easy at first for me to visualize how it came together.
I had difficulty at first trying to choose a size because my hip measurements called for one size and my waist for two sizes larger. I was able to get feedback from Heather Lou through the course to just use my hip when choosing a size and perhaps make the elastic slightly longer. That is what I did and it worked perfectly. I think it would be helpful if that type of information was included in the pattern sizing chart.
The short were fun to make. I lengthened them a bit. I didn't like the elasticized waistband since it adds bulk to the back, but they are comfortable to wear.
Love this pattern. I have always been hard to fit when it comes to pants - wide hips, flat in the back but not so much in the belly and a sensitivity to anything tight around the waist. The flat front on this pattern helps hide the tummy while the elastic in the back only gives me a little more shape in the back. I made the shorts first but added several inches to the leg length and used a light weight denim and absolutely love the fit and love the pockets. I also made the crop length pants and love those as well. Wonderful instructions and nice designs, working on the Kalle shirt now. Thanks Closet Case!
